Example Syllabus for ELA 4 (Senior English)

Now that I have become an Old Teacher, I’m spending more time helping Young Teachers figure out how to…teacher.

The content area isn’t what stresses them. It’s the classroom management and the day to day minutiae that gets them binging on chocolate and crying at their desks at 6:00pm. At least in my building, nobody has much to say about our syllabi until about an hour before the parents arrive at Back to School Night. Then, it’s a mad scramble to throw together a comprehensive course overview. The young ones freak right out.

Furthermore–at least for me–I never took any college courses that taught me how to write a high school ELA syllabus. In retrospect, this is a bit of a gap in the educational process.

So. If you are a young teacher (or an old teacher trying to help young teachers) in need of an example syllabus, check this out. It’s an anonymized version of my own ELA 4 (grade 12/senior English) syllabus. It’ll give you a framework for creating your own syllabus and will hopefully alleviate some stress!

About sara

I have spent the last 18 years in various classrooms, most of them in alternative education working with criminal, at-risk, or behavior-disordered students. I am just a regular teacher like you, who learned a lot of quality information the hard way. Currently, I work with students, families, and teachers to formulate effective and creative plans for helping students change problematic behaviors into productive ones as we work together to reintegrate students back into a general education high school setting.
